Spring Visit 2022

Update February 2022 – Members will receive a flyer/booking form in the February edition of Roots.  We would advise you, if you are wanting to join us, to book your room at The Swan Hotel quickly as the rooms are only block booked until the end of February.  Thank you and looking forward to meeting up with friends old and new.

Following the success of the Autumn meeting and AGM in Reeth which was the first physical meeting since the lifting of Covid restrictions, your Committee have decided to hold our Spring 2022 meeting in person, rather than by Zoom. Covid disrupted our longstanding policy of holding two Spring meetings in the North of England followed by one meeting in the south, which roughly reflects the geographic distribution of our UK membership.

Arrangements have been made to host the meeting on Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th May 2022, in Wells, Somerset. An agreement has been struck with The Swan Hotel next to The Cathedral in Wells for the nights of 17th & 18th May at a price of about £270 to £320 for a double room for 2 nights on a B & B basis.

We will meet at Bruton Community Hall on 18th May, one of our forebears, J.H. Alderson, was Master of the historic establishment of Sexey’s Hospital during the early 1900’s. These premises were built as Almshouses in the late 17th Century and remain in that use today. We have arranged for a local historian to give a talk on the history of the buildings, one of our members has researched JHA and will give a presentation of his life and the current Master of Sexey’s will also tell us the more recent history of the buildings and plans for the future the present  this will be followed by a buffet lunch and in the afternoon guided tour of the Town and local museum. (These arrangements would be conducted in a Covid safe manner to prevent any interaction between our members and the current residents of the Almshouses).

A group evening meal is planned for the Wednesday evening, with the Thursday morning being spent enjoying the City of Wells, including the Cathedral, with an optional light lunch to conclude the event.

For those travelling from further afield who may wish to travel the day before the event and stay overnight on the Tuesday, a range of options would be offered, including the opportunity to attend the Evensong Service in the Cathedral, prior to an optional evening meal.
