AGM and Autumn Meeting -10th and 11th September 2022

Update 11th September 2022.

We’ve just returned home following the above event and were so pleased that so many members were able to join us, including some members from Canada.  The morning speaker had to cancel but Andrew Alderson took the place and gave a most interesting presentation about Tithes and ownership of parcels of land and buildings of our Alderson’s.  He presented it in such a way that we were all able to understand and were impressed by the amount of work he and his daughter Lizzie has put in for all our benefit as the information will be available on P-Tree.  After the formalities of the AGM we enjoyed a lovely lunch and a further talk by Bill Heyes on Lead Mining in Teesdale.  That evening most of the group enjoyed a meal at the Three Horseshoes Inn.  On Sunday morning the sun was shining as we met up again at The Bowes Museum and all enjoyed a very interesting guided tour of parts of the Museum.

Andrew Alderson has agreed to share his presentation with the whole society via Zoom. Date/time to be confirmed, watch this space!

All in all a successful event, special thanks to Godfrey and Vivian Alderson for their organisation.

This year we are meeting at the Witham community and arts centre in the centre of Barnard Castle. We meet at 10.00 with refreshments ready for our first talk at 11.00. This will be by Tony Sergeant who is an officer with the Yorkshire Dales National Park. His talk will be “Wildlife and Moor land Management”. The conflict between grouse, sheep and drainage is a continuing problem.

After the AGM at 12.00pm there will be a buffet lunch. Then at 2.00pm, we have a talk by Dr  Will Heyes and his subject  will be “The Lead Mines and Mining in Teesdale”. After refreshments, we will close the meeting at around 4.00pm.

An evening meal has been arranged at The Three Horseshoes Hotel around the corner in Galgate. Accommodation has also been reserved at the Three Horseshoes, tel 01833 631777. Mention the AFHS when booking. (Parking available for residents)

On the Sunday morning we have arranged for a guided tour of the Bowes Museum. We will be shown various highlights and the latest exhibitions.
