It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join us for the 2025 Autumn Meeting and
AGM of the AFHS. This year we are returning to the Three Horseshoes Hotel in Barnard
Castle where we have previously enjoyed splendid hospitality. If you have not already
done so, accommodation can be arranged at a discounted rate by contacting the hotel on
01833 631777 and mentioning AFHS when booking. Alternatively, there is a good range of
hotels, guest houses & bed and breakfast places available in Barnard Castle, and a wide
selection of holiday cottages in the beautiful surrounding countryside.
Our meeting will again be hosted by the Barnard Castle Cricket Club, which is only some 4
minutes’ walk from the Three Horseshoes Hotel, and has a private car park reserved for
those of us who prefer not to have to walk so far. The meeting will start at 10.00 AM with
Tea, Coffee and biscuits and an opportunity to catch up with friends, old and new, and
family members. There will also be an opportunity to make use of the impressive amount
of data available via the Society’s records and archives. We look forward to a talk by Ron
Allan on ‘The development of the definitive map of Public Rights of Way.’ The AGM itself
will take place at 12.00 (free entry to all AFHS Members), which will be followed by a buffet
lunch. During the afternoon we will receive an illustrated talk by Prof. Alan Townsend who
will present a talk on ‘The Stockton and Darlington Railway and its ramifications in the
Pennines and round the world.’ We have use of the pavilion room at the Cricket Club until
4.00 PM for our members to socialise and catch up with family and friends.
Flyer with booking details will be emailed to members shortly and will also be included in your next copy of Alderson Roots.
